2022 in review – our travels and lifestyle in short

We love yearly recaps as they fill us with gratefulness and humbleness when we go through what happened in the year and appreciate it. What we didn’t like in our previous yearly summaries was that they took a lot of time and they were so long. So we decided to present you our 2022 travel review in under 1000 words.

The year 2022 was an incredible time for travel, full of exciting new destinations and experiences and revisiting old favorite places as well. We managed to create our base in the mountains (read below) and said goodbye to Sofia after so many years of living there. So, a lot of changes this year, all of them for good, and many exciting moments, encounters, and opportunities.

Beutiful places to visit in Madeira, Teleférico das Achadas da Cruz

January started off strong with a trip to Puglia in Italy. We celebrated the new year on the plazas of Lecce, drove through the magical landscapes and visited majestic castles, stopped at rustic places for a bite and drank too much prosecco. We went to experience and ski Livigno for the third time and enjoyed snowshoe hikes in marvelous frozen landscapes, delicious food (we’re in Italy, of course) and cheerful winter atmosphere.

February saw us actively learning Greek and mixing in a spa weekend – the perfect way to recharge batteries after months of not much sun.

March took us to Mallorca and Madeira – two beautiful island destinations that couldn’t be more different. We spent our days exploring their diverse cultures, sampling local delicacies (mostly on Mallorca) and soaking up the warmth of their sunny climates (mostly on Madeira although we experienced different climates within the week we were there).

April brought us on an adventure through Sri Lanka, where we experienced its vibrant culture and stunning natural beauty firsthand. We did a huge tour around the southern and central parts of the island with the best local guide. Sri Lanka was so welcoming and heartwarming even in the difficult times its people were experiencing

May was all about India, specifically the lush and serene state of Kerala. Aside from exploring the amazing sights, sounds, and flavors of Central Kerala, we also had the opportunity to take a hike through tea plantations and peaks in Munnar and a boat ride through the backwaters and experience traditional Indian hospitality first-hand in Kumarakom. We became part of the Kerala Travel Mart and it was such a vivid experience. We also revisited our beloved Fort Kochi.

June was the month we celebrated 10 years of The Magic of Traveling! The month had us mostly on the beach in Greece but also brought us to Bulgaria for the Bansko Nomad Fest, an event that celebrates location independent lifestyle. We met like-minded individuals from all over the world and enjoyed evenings spent around campfires and pools and many informative and fun sessions.

July saw us heading north to Norway for a road trip amongst stunning scenery, then south to Greece for our freediving course on the beautiful coast of Sithonia.

August was all about the beach and Bansko again – specifically the Jazz Fest which we thoroughly enjoyed! We also had the chance to explore Greece’s stunning beaches in Halkidiki during this time.

September took us west, first to the Republic of Kosovo and then to Brno in the Czech Republic. We enjoyed exploring both countries’ unique cultures and sampling their delicious traditional cuisines. Kosovo was one of the nicest travel surprises for the year. Traverse and Brno brought wonderful off-the-beaten-path experiences.

October brought us back to Bulgaria for a relaxing spa break in Velingrad, before finally settling down in Bansko for good! And of course, checking out the spa scene in town. We managed to play a lot of tennis which totally helped us get into shape (mostly the right shape of mind).

November was about exploring Europe on foot – we completed the Camino Ingles pilgrimage route through Galicia, Spain, which was a breathtaking experience. Our shortest but toughest Camino so far.

December finished off our travels for the year with some much deserved rest and relaxation in our beloved exploratory style in Tunisia

This year we also managed to do some renovations in our Greek house, as well as we bought an apartment in Bansko and moved into it. We managed to get rid of tons of stuff and Sofia became a travel destination (haha, one of the very popular ones). We also became priority backers of an exciting new project – Coliving Semkovo.

On 22nd of every month

The 22nd of every month saw us doing some special and fun things, as well as get a lot of work done. Keeping our tradition (for the third and last time) to do something cool on 22nd day of each month in the year 2022, here’s what we did on those days: ate special cakes and cookies at home in Sofia, actively studied Greek, explored the lush greenery of Madeira, flew to Colombo, had a renovation and construction planning, and had a live music dinner in a local tavern in Greece.

The second half of the year put us in some new places and activities on the 22nd of each month: freediving in Sithonia, enjoying a light show in Strasbourg, having a spa day on Kasandra, playing tennis, tossing coins to explore Sofia in a fun way, and attending a local artists concert in Bansko.

For the sake of this article being less than 1000 words, we’ll skip our blogging and business recap parts. If you have any questions or want to chat about those, do not hesitate to get in touch with us!

Overall, 2022 was an incredible year of travel full of unforgettable memories that we will treasure forever. We’re so grateful for the opportunity to explore the world and discover new cultures, and can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store!

  1. It is incredible that you guys managed to tour so many countries in 2022 even when the fear of Covid has not receded completely.

    • We really like this quote by Albert Camus:

“What gives value to travel is fear. It is the fact that, at a certain moment, when we are so far from our own country … we are seized by a vague fear, and an instinctive desire to go back to the protection of old habits … this is why we should not say that we travel for pleasure. There is no pleasure in traveling, and I look upon it more as an occasion for spiritual testing … Pleasure takes us away from ourselves in the same way as distraction, in Pascal’s use of the word, takes us away from God. Travel, which is like a greater and a graver science, brings us back to ourselves.”

      ― Albert Camus, Notebooks, 1935-1951
