Hotel review: Aveda Kumarakom, Kerala, India

The well-known backwaters of Kerala have attracted millions of visitors and there’s a good reason for that. Peacefulness, dreamy views, possibilities for responsible tourism, and the perfect setting for a honeymoon are only some of the reasons travelers are attracted to the backwaters. And when it comes to where to stay in Kumarakom village which is gaining popularity, nestled at Vembanad Lake, there’s one resort that we visited and that contributed to our experience in God’s Own Country. Welcome to Aveda Kumarakom hotel review!

Accommodation in Aveda Kumarakom

Aveda Kumarakom has a 150-meter-long outdoor pool which by itself is a good enough reason to want to stay at the hotel. We had the most relaxing and picturesque time in Kumarakom, swimming at the pool, and contemplating the sunset over Lake Vembanad with all the magical post-sunset colors. Although there were other people, even families with kids, there was enough space in the swimming pool for everyone. For your well-being, Aveda also has an Ayurvedic Spa and Wellness Centre.

We stayed at a poolside premium cottage with direct access to the pool – we just took 6 steps from the patio to jump straight to the pool. The property offers also Lakeview premium terrace rooms and 2-bedroom suites, poolside luxury villas with a plunge pool, and lakefront luxury villas with a plunge pool. The last two types of accommodation come with a private pool and are the most luxurious.

Our cottage was spacious with outdoor and indoor showers, a huge bed, and a comfy patio to enjoy the greenery around and of course, the pool. A great benefit of our room was the proximity to the restaurant. Now, Aveda Kumarakom claims that their unique selling point is the pool, which is true, but for returning users, we believe the restaurant is a major draw. Tasty dishes from Kerala, different parts of India, as well as international ones, come served with love and cooked by the magic hands of the team of chefs. We had dinner and breakfast at Aveda’s restaurant and that was hands down the most delicious food we ate on our whole trip to Central Kerala.

Things to do in the area

If you get bored enjoying this beautiful property, hanging in the pool, watching boats go by, and indulging in tasty food at the restaurant, there are plenty of other things to do in the Kumarakom area. You can arrange with reception or by yourself trips to Kumarakom bird sanctuary, Aruvikkuzhi waterfall, Bay Island Driftwood Museum, and Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple.

What we did and highly recommend was a tour with the responsible tourism team in Kumarakom. In 2007, the Department of Tourism of the Government of Kerala established the Kumarakom Responsible Tourism project to foster sustainable tourism development in the state. Kumarakom was selected as a pilot destination for the initiative, as one of Kerala’s most globally renowned destinations. Activities with Kumarakom RT may include sailing the canals with a shikhara boat, receiving a warm welcome from the people from the village in their houses, learning how to climb a coconut tree, toddy tapping, net fishing, and enjoying the crafts of creating screw pine products and coir making.

What a luxurious property! I loved the fact that the pool was only 6 steps away – a great USP to have, indeed 🙂
