Baltic road trip itinerary – a charming journey through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia

If someone told you there is nothing special about the Baltics – they must have lied to you very badly or never visited this magical land! Baltics are so special and welcoming that after our visit there all we can do is regret not having visited them earlier. To fix this mistake, we decided to describe our Baltic road trip itinerary through the three countries, give you some tips on its destinations and share our travel experiences.

We find very hard not to love the green forests, charming old towns, and friendly people. Or be enchanted…

Vilnius, Lithuania | Trakai, Lithuania | Klaipėda, Lithuania | Nida, Lithuania | Šiauliai, Lithuania | Jūrmala, Latvia | Riga, Latvia | Pärnu, Estonia | Tallinn, Estonia | Viru raba, Estonia | Vainupea, Estonia | Cēsis, Latvia

Our Luthuania – Latvia – Estonia Baltic itinerary

  1. Day 01: Arrived in Vilnius ~~ We got an upgrade from the rent a car company for free and the car was brand new – only 2000 Km 🏎 🏎 🏎

  2. Day 02: Trip to Klaipėda ~~ Going out from Vilnius was like a labyrinth because of a marathon. The magnificent Trakai castle and the sunset in Klaipeda were worth the hassle . 🏃🏃🏻🏃🏼🏃🏽🏃🏾🏃🏿

  3. Day 03: The Curonian Spit ~~ Our goal was accomplished thanks to the 5-minute ferry ride and the endless beach and sand dunes. How can you not enjoy the shade of millions of trees? 🙂 🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🏖

  4. Day 04:  Jūrmala ~~ Late night sunset on the beach, but before that a new friendship was born in Šiauliai.  While “riding” the huge bike with a great chocolate in our hands, we felt like small innocent children. 🌅🌅🌅🍷🍷🍷

  5. Day 05:  Riga ~~  An old town gourmet walks, green parks and mirror effect photo on the Pilsetas kanal. 🌉🍽🍵🍲🍮

  6. Day 06: Tallinn ~~ After the peaceful and empty Pärnu, the magic was with us when we drove across a pedestrian street by mistake. The ovations and applause of the pedestrians weren’t motivational but more embarrassing. 🌆🌆🌆🏰🏰🏰

  7. Day 07: Lahemaa National Park ~~ Old fishermen’s village visit and a taste of bog walking, such calm and green scenery all over the park. 🎣🌿🎣🌿🎣🌿

  8. Day 08: Vilnius ~~ 700+ kilometers drive for the day, happy that we had a great stop with dancing experience among the medieval walls of Cēsis. 💃🏻💃🏼💃🏻💃🏼💃🏻💃🏼

Baltics road trip itinerary

After a 2000 kilometers drive and a bit less on foot :-), we are closing our eyes for a short sleep before leaving these beautiful countries. We stopped by Malmö, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark for two days before getting back home.

Magical Baltic places to visit

The Baltic region hat its special magic – it will capture your senses, it will sparkle your curiosity, it will welcome you! All the Baltic places to visit will enchant you.

We are happy to present to you the magic of the Baltics, the way we experienced it during our amazing Baltic road trip. Yes, we totally got into the Baltics summer vibe back then. We are still going strong with memories…

So let’s dive into some magical moments from all the towns, cities, natural phenomena we visited. Here is the list in order of appearance. May the Magic be with you!

Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius we will remember for the music festivals running through the old town, architecture, and history to be admired, and the long dusk to let you recap the day while waiting for the night.

Trakai Castle, Lithuania

Trakai castle is a major tourist attraction – the only castle on an island in Lithuania. But you can enjoy it off the beaten path by finding the authentic local restaurants where they recommend you want to eat and drink (you can’t read the menu anyway) and walk all the way away from the crowds where the real royalties went once upon a time.

Klaipeda, Lithuania

Klaipeda hides the charm of an old-time port town and modern jazz city. Industrial romance or skyscraper views to the never-sleeping reality? You can decide for yourselves and give a chance to the off-the-beaten-track culture.

And here’s a comprehensive guide to Klaipeda, in case you decide to treat yourselves with a few days in the city.

Curonian Spit, Lithuania

Curonian spit, geographically, is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea.  In reality, it is a magic land full of surreal landscapes, human-sorcerers to keep you constantly smiling and sometimes evil fly-beasts to examine your stamina.

Šiauliai, Lithuania

Šiauliai is probably one of those towns you will visit only if you have friends there. And you will be greeted by the golden boy, the cute details everywhere around you and the chocolate aroma. Good, we had a friend to reveal the town’s charm for us!

Jurmala, Latvia

Jurmala is not the resort where only rich people build their mansions and enjoy the short summer. The place is for those who want the fresh breeze in the hair while enjoying the perfect glass of wine during the long sunset with some fine sand between the toes.

Riga, Latvia

Riga is that kind of city where you will meet smiling business people in the freshly looking restaurants, a city where you will sin with fine dishes, a place where hidden tiny streets lead to major landmarks.

Pärnu, Estonia

Pärnu may not be a top tourist attraction and that’s why we loved it! The whole main walking street just for you! The whole bunch of tasty local dishes just for you! And a crazy souvenir shop featuring local artists! Hurry up and visit this lovely town before it gets crowded!

Cēsis, Latvia

Cēsis is a detour we are glad we took. A small medieval town with summer festivals that bigger cities might only envy. A huge park is a home for traditional dance massive rehearsals and also lonely medieval walls and affordable traditional cuisine.

Rent a car to explore the Baltics region

We rented a car from our starting (and ending) point Vilnius, which we used to go everywhere in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. There are practically no borders. As usual, we used the platform to find the best deals.

Copenhagen can be a pure delight in spring. Check this article out to find where the most charming spring spots are.

So those were the magical stops of our charming road trip through the Baltic countries, plus some unexpected day trips on the way back home. Hope you got inspired to visit and feel the magic of all those places!

  1. Funny enough we started from Riga then went to Tallinn and Vilnius at last. Maybe it was because I was a bit tired at the end or the bad weather was catching up with me but I didn’t really like Vilnius. Would definitely love to see it in the summer as i can assume it will be full of people and color especially the hippie Uzupis district.

    • Maybe it was the great weather we caught up there or the music vibes and the many people and the sun smiling at everybody 🙂
You should give it a second try for sure 😉

  2. Sabs

I know absolutely nothing about the Baltic countries. Would love to hear more about your road trip there!

  3. Looks fascinating! I shall keep an eye out for more posts as I might have the chance to visit Riga in Latvia in the autumn, so I am intrigued to learn more. Thanks for this.

    • Latvia is magical! And Riga is super fresh and welcoming – you should be excited 🙂

  4. This sounds like so much fun! I’ve not been to any of the Baltic countries, but it seems like a road trip is the way to go!

    • It is! Road trips are perfect for anywhere you want to see as much as possible being quite independent at the same time. 🙂

  5. Hassan

Love the way you plotted the route of your road trip.

  6. Gosh you covered a lot of ground! Great way to get a feel for a region for sure.

    • We usually explore fast and cover a lot! But roads in the Baltics are so nice so it’s quite easy!

  7. Thank you for sharing this roadtrip experience. We might take this as inpiration when we will explor these Baltic countries with a roadtrip.
