A year ago was our first attempt to visit Santorini. It ended up being a complete failure mainly because we had the wrong idea. Our biggest mistake was to get involved with a tourist company just because we were interested in the charter flight to Santorini that they offered. Our bags were packed and we were very excited to leave when 2 days before the flight we were notified that it is canceled and the agency went bankrupt. We had no time and no other option to get to the island. However, we did not give up and managed to put together an unforgettable road trip through Macedonia, Albania, and Montenegro.
However, this time (the year is 2013) it seemed like our chances of visiting Santorini are pretty good. We had sailed from Crete afternoon with our cruise ship. The sea was calm. We were getting closer to Santorini and the volcano did not erupt, and we didn’t crash into the rocks. It seems like luck was on our side this time. Some small boats left us at the new port. We kept our lunch inside our stomachs even though turns on our way up on the island were terrifying. The towns in Santorini are on the top of almost vertical rock.
Update 2021: Only 8 years later, check out the magic of Santorini on our third attempt!

As we were getting near to Santorini with our ship, the main deck was full of people. there were some arguments about who takes the better stop for pictures. However, the best photographers found ways to capture the volcanic rocks, rising from the water.
Oia
We headed to the village of Oia. If by hearing Santorini you think about white houses, blue roofs, and amazing views towards the sea – yes, this is it. Oia offers lots of those. It is really amazing when a place turns out to be exactly what the photos of it show. This village offers vistas that stay in your mind for a really long time. Just in case they start to fade away we captured some of them with our camera.
Next time we do hope we could do a beach hopping on the island. To experience Santorini’s best beaches…
The photos above are from the “unpopular” part of the island.
In the photo above you can see a bride being prepared for the next stage of the photo session. It is not easy looking gorgeous when it is that hot. It is so hot that we needed to stop at every shadow, so we can get some rest.
Next time we definitely need to stay longer on Santorini!

Cheers to our second and very successful attempt to visit Santorini! Spoiler alert: read about our third attempt to visit the island in 2021.
