Budapest 4 friends

with No Comments

In the length of 4 years we visited Budapest twice. First time just the two of us, the second time with 4 friends – two of them already living there. You can do many things on your own or with friends so we combined some memories from those two types of Budapest travel experiences to create an ultimate collection of things to eat, see and experience in the city where the Danube river separates Buda from Pest.

4 years and 4 more friends later, we compiled the list of 4 major experiences everyone in our humble opinion should have in Budapest:

party and spa

It is a sin not to go to bath at the capital of thermal springs. You don’t have to be a royalty anymore to experience the aromatic hot springs and saunas or the outdoor pools of the hundreds-of-years-old buildings. And as for the party – the city has a thing or two to offer! Take your friends on wine tasting sessions, a bar or to a restaurant with no English menus or teach them how to dance to surprise them or just stay home to celebrate а birthday or two.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath - even if you can't pronounce it - don't miss it - it was build in 1913 but still going strong. Don't forget to mingle with the crowd in the swirl action pool!

Don't miss another classic in thermal bathing - Gellért Baths and Hotel. Almost Antique and luxurious!

Winetasting is a must-do in Budapest - do it home, in some of the fine restaurants or in the cave under Hilton on Fisherman's Bastion!

Never miss a opportunity to stop by a nice place and party like a local! Traditional Hungarian (and also Romanian) music and dance, grab your friends and meet some new dance buddies:

They surely can rock'n'roll. Can you?

Vaci street has never seen so crazy party people. All you need is good company and… laurel leafs?

live/stay

Our first stay was in District 8 near Kálvin tér metro station, in an old building with inner terraces, the second time we slept in our friends’ apartment which was in the very heart of District 1, old neighborhood with some fresh buildings and mesmerizing views to the river and the Parliament.

Let the journey take you to  In search of poppies, cherries and something more
Living in district 1 - can you wake up with a view like this every day?

eat

Needless to say, Budapest is a great destination for foodies! See why in the pictures! Every dish is as tasty as home-made and very often it is actually home-made 🙂 Yummy!

Soup in bread, huge ice-creams and anything locals recommend – go for it!

Home-made goulash soup, bagel-like street food or sophisticated dish in a restaurant – you can’t go wrong.

move

Don’t miss the chance to ride the metro, ride a public transport boat, ride a car, ride a tram, or just cross the river on some of those remarkable bridges!
In the meantime: near Heroes’ square (Hősök tere) you can choose your next retro van to hit the road with!

Some window shopping – retro VW get-together!

Don’t remember where this colorful art is – it was four years ago…anyone help?

Who wouldn’t love to be a lonely Juliette on a tower of the Fisherman’s Bastion?

The dreamy Liberty bridge

Dare to play with that scary person? This monument is situated neat the castle near Heroes’ square and it tends to be slippery over there!

The night is just about to say hello

Parliament tour – It is gorgeous inside as well! And don’t worry – there is space for your cigar in case you feel like in old times 🙂

Coffee with that view? Yes, please. Mulled wine? Please and thank you!

In the caves…needed to stay emotionally strong

Join us on a retro electrocar ride through the park of Margaret island. It is sometimes off-road so pay attention!

If you have plenty of time – navigate yourself with a bus to the Chinese market – and check out the differences between the flea markets here and there 🙂

Few hours with the train and you will reach the Hungarian Open Air Museum Skanzen - where you don't need the language to feel like a local and enjoy the culture and memories.

Essential vocabulary

Cheers – egészségére (pronounce it like egeshegedre)

Good afternoon – jó napot (say yo nappod)

Bye-bye, see you – viszlát or much easier just say see ya

Thank you – köszönöm (good luck pronouncing that!)

Dear friends, enjoy every experience in Budapest, with or without friends. Don’t forget to follow the locals‘ advice and have fun your own way!

And we do have some quite definite plans for next time: all night bathing in a 24/7 bath next to Elizabeth bridge.

Did we miss something funny and interesting to do in Budapest! Tell us!
