Peru – turbulence around Nazca

with No Comments
Sometimes the last days of a journey pass in quiet melancholy, boredom or a light depression, provoked by the impending return home. At the end of our trip to South America just the opposite happened – we weren’t melancholic or bored, didn’t even come close to depression. We had a general plan to catch a bus from La Paz to Nazca to see the lines and then go to Lima for two days, and then finally fly to Europe.

Having found the most comfortable bus from La Paz to Nazca (without changing buses) we were calm about the next 24 hours of traveling. Instead, the drivers covered the miles within 22 hours, skipping the turns between Arequipa and Nazca. I couldn’t wait to get out, my stomach as well. We were welcomed warmly in an otherwise grim town. Within 2 hours we were on a big buggy. We visited aqueducts, ruins, cemeteries of the Nazca people. We did offroading and sandboarding, but this time we slid down the dunes on our stomachs, faces, asses, whatever we felt was most comfortable. We truly had fun and then we took off on the second buggy (the first broke down, no idea if it was from our wild driving). The sunset of our dreams was accompanied by rain. This is the second desert where once we arrive it starts raining suddenly and inexplicably. We accept invitations, if anyone is in need of rain in the wasteland.

If we recovered from the driving on the turns and the drive through the desert is of no importance. The next morning we got on a small plane to see the famous Nazca lines.

The plane was circling around the Nazca figures from every side so every one of the 4 passengers could see them. Some are bigger and easy to spot, others you need to look at longer before your eyes focus. To make them out as clearly as on the pictures the eye needs to add several filters.

Let the journey take you to  Chile - the stars above La Serena

Despite not being too mystical, our favorites the Monkey, the Hummingbird, the Astronaut and so on are a very beautiful work of art. The controversial opinions, if you ask us, are caused by the experience in the plane. In our case, while the captain flew the plane all was well. But once the apprentice next to him took control in order to be trained, our stomachs passed through hell. And this was only the beginning…
